Speaker Stands that Make a Difference
Speaker stands are purpose-built to bring out the best sonic performance from your speakers by isolating them from any surface that can impede its performance. Whether it is minimising vibrations, curtailing early reflections, or guaranteeing optimum treble levels, you want to avoid surfaces that are in close proximity to your speakers as much as you can.
Early reflections can colour and distort the sound image, which is also why we recommend keeping your speakers away from walls. Speaker stands are especially useful in the low end of the spectrum, which is omnidirectional and therefore a lot more sensitive to neighbouring surfaces than the high-frequency region. But speaker stands do more than just alleviate early reflections.
Why Speaker Stands Matter to Hi-Fi Sound?
There are several aspects of the listening experience that are affected by how speakers are placed and positioned in an indoor space. Here’s what quality speaker stands are capable of delivering.
Sound Isolation
Providing decoupling between the speakers and the floor surface using a principle known as mechanical isolation, typical speaker stands have feet that consist of rubber for wooden floors or spikes for solid ones at the bottom. They also consist of a base plate that manages vibrations with larger ones that have their feet far apart. This provides added stability and makes it harder for the speakers to tip over.
Space is prioritised in the support column for cable compartments and even sand as it is a great damper. The top plate provides another layer of decoupling between the stand and the speaker. Where the feet either couple or decouple the stand with the ground, the top plate does the same with the speakers. Thus each part of the speaker stand plays an important role in managing vibrations.
Surface Protection
Wooden floors tend to vibrate due to the pressure generated by loudspeakers. To maintain high performance, stands and platforms are essential as they keep these vibrations from looping back into the speaker. What kind of surface protection is needed depends entirely on the surface. With solid surfaces such as concrete, even big bookshelf speakers can’t excite an entire concrete floor.
It can therefore be used to eliminate vibrations by coupling and fastening the speakers to the floor as tightly as possible. What you use (for eg.: rubber rings or spikes) between the floor and your stand really makes a big difference to the sound. Carpets are, for example, completely different animals. In the case of carpets on solid floors, the spikes need to make contact with the floor by going through the carpet.
However, wooden floors can be trickier as using spikes that go through a carpet and make contact with the wood will introduce new vibrations. Heavier stands produce a better connection with the floor underneath so that they don’t just float around on the carpet.
Sound Damping
A lot of speaker stands feature a dedicated compartment for sand or similarly dense sound-damping materials. Speakers play music by moving its drive unit in and out to create sound pressure. When it pushes outwards, it creates pressure, but when it moves inwards it pushes the entire speaker backwards.
All this unwanted movement can colour and distort the sound so bracing is added to the cabinet to prevent vibration but that doesn’t still doesn’t solve the entire problem. One of the best ways to reduce speaker movement is to add more mass to the speaker and the stand. Sand can provide great dampening but will also prevent the stand from ringing when it is excited by the right frequencies.
How much damping material is added also affects the sound profile. While we advise adding as much weight as possible, too much and you can change the centre of gravity, making it more prone to tipping over. Our usual recommendation is usually 2/3 of the full capacity of the column which is in line with industry best practices.
Great Treble
Unlike bass units, tweeters don’t radiate sound pressure in all directions. While it’s possible to put speakers on the floor with a little tilt aimed at the ears, there would still be sound coming from the floor and directionality would suffer even though the treble is right. For the right level of treble and proper directionality from your speaker’s tweeters, they need to be at ear level.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q. What do I need to consider when buying speaker stands?
A. Primary factors to consider when buying speaker stands include sturdiness, weight rating, top plate construction, base and feet, cable management capabilities and height.
Q. Can I just keep my speakers on a desk instead of dedicated stands?
A. Speaker stands provide superior decoupling between the speaker and the adjacent surface as compared to placing them directly on a desk. Therefore, for superior performance from an expensive pair of speakers, there is no content between dedicated speaker stands and just placing the speaker in direct contact with any surface.
