High Quality HDMI Cables for Pristine Image Quality

Built to supersede the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard, HDMI cables are the most popular way to send uncompressed audio and video between a source and receiver. It has been adopted by over 1700 companies that have collectively sold over 8 billion HDMI-enabled devices to date.

Initially built to support Full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels) at a refresh rate of 60Hz, its latest HDMI 2.1a specification supports uncompressed 8K Ultra HD resolution (7680x4380) at 60Hz. Why all the fuss over something as nondescript as HDMI cables, you may ask? That’s because not all cables are built equally.

Here’s what you need to know about HDMI cables.

HDMI Cable Types & Specifications

HDMI cables are primarily found in 5 different varieties. These are:

Type A – the most common type that we are all familiar with, this is the full-size HDMI connector that was launched with the original standard and continues to be the most popular one today.

Type B – this connector was obsolete soon after it launched as it was meant to carry DVI-D video. But with the introduction of HDMI 1.3, the speed of a single link exceeded that of the dual link.

Type C – Also known as Mini HDMI, this connector is much smaller than its Type A brethren and was introduced along with the HDMI 1.3 standard. It is commonly found on DSLRs and SatNavs.

Type D – This connector resembles a Micro USB port and is therefore also known as a Micro HDMI connector. It was introduced with HDMI 1.4 and is commonly found on mobile phones.

Type E – By far, the most obscure, this connector was built for automobiles and incorporates a locking tab for a more secure connection. It was also introduced along with HDMI 1.4.

The HDMI standard is compatible with other video connectors and therefore, HDMI cables come in various shapes and sizes, built to support different resolutions and refresh rates. Choosing the right cable is extremely important as it determines how much data throughput can be provided to the connected devices so that the desired video quality can be reproduced.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. I have a 4K TV with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Do I need a special HDMI cable?

A. In essence, yes. Native 4K@120Hz is only possible with the HDMI 2.1 standard. Therefore you need to look for an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for that resolution and refresh rate. At Ooberpad we have both copper and fibre optic-based cables. The latter provides improved signal quality over large distances and is much lighter in weight. However, they are also more expensive and should only be used for setups where the distance between the transmitting and receiving devices is > 25 feet.

Q. Where is an HDMI with Ethernet cable and where is it used?

A. Internet-enabled HDMI devices that want to share an internet connection via the HDMI link can do so with the help of an HDMI Ethernet cable. This eliminates the need for a separate Ethernet cable and provides a connection platform that allows HDMI-enabled components to share content between devices.
