Blu-ray and CD Players for AV Connoisseurs
The rise of streaming services from the likes of Amazon, Disney, Netflix, HBO and others in recent years may lead you to believe that physical media consumption is on the verge of extinction. While it may have certainly slowed down, there are still a few reasons to own dedicated devices for physical media playback.
Having complete access to your favourite movies or songs on demand is perhaps one of the biggest upsides to owning any physical media. With the fickle nature of limited-period licensing and other geographical restrictions in streaming services, this freedom of access can be quite limiting.
Discerning audio and cinephiles also enjoy building and displaying a large library of physical media containing rare artbooks, assorted liner notes, making-of features, director’s commentaries, deleted scenes and lots more. This is not something any online streaming service can authentically replicate.
Finally, with the right components, playing any media off of a physical disc is an arguably more fulfilling experience and can even sound better compared to streaming music from an app. For offline media consumption, there’s hardly a better option.
Find a wide variety of Blu-ray players, CD players, SACD players, network CD players, CD and SACD transports and lots more from top brands to accompany your home theatre or hi-fi stereo setups only on Ooberpad. Our dedicated team can help you find the right combination of speakers for your home cinema or hi-fi stereo setup so you can enjoy the best.
Blu-ray Players – Features to Look Out For
Physical media playback devices come in many different configurations and can be broadly distinguished by their ability to play certain audio and video formats. Choosing the right player primarily depends on various factors including the number of supported media formats, speaker configurations, screen capabilities, build quality and wireless capabilities to name a few. Let’s take a quick look at some of these in a bit more detail.
Blu-ray discs were made to supersede the extremely popular (and still widely used) DVD format with the primary use case being the storage of high-definition (at the time) video in 720p or 1080p resolutions and the distribution of video games. Brought on by its continuous evolution, Blu-ray discs today are able to store a lot more data in the same form factor and are capable of Ultra HD 4K playback as well as high-resolution audio. These are branded as Ultra HD Blu-ray and have been the de facto standard of physical media distribution on all new gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Connections
To connect the player to your TV or receiver, look for Blu-ray players that feature HDMI 2.0 or higher. This is certified to provide the bandwidth needed for 4K playback at 60 frames per second. You may also want to look for players with dedicated audio outputs. Many players come with RCA, optical or coaxial digital audio outputs for connecting to an older home theatre receiver or sound bar. An ethernet or LAN port provides internet access to a home network and USB ports offer the ability to play media from a flash drive.
Audio Codecs
Modern high-end Blu-ray players come with support for a host of different audio-enhancing technologies dedicated to hi-res audio playback such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X and more. When making a purchase, it’s also important to look at support for lossless audio formats such as AIFF, ALAC, DSD, FLAC, WAV etc. Paired with stereo or surround speakers, Blu-ray players can be extremely versatile as music-listening devices too.
Nice-to-Haves
Higher-end players are frequently built with music listening in mind. They offer enhanced picture and sound quality by decreasing resonance and keeping discs stable as they spin. Many feature a built-in high-quality digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) capable of producing excellent sound quality from both stereo and multichannel sources. Some higher-end players isolate the power supply, video driver, and audio circuitry, which reduces interference and produces excellent pictures and sound.
SACD Players – Hi-fi Audio in 5.1 Surround
Featuring the same areal density as a DVD, Super Audio Compact Discs (SACDs) are far superior to conventional Compact Discs (CDs) for music listening. Due to the much higher sampling frequency afforded by an SACD compared to a conventional CD (2822.4 kHz vs 44.1 kHz) and 6 discrete surround channels compared to 2 stereo channels, it is still very popular within the audiophile community.
True Surround – The full potential of SACDs can only be achieved with 5.1 surround systems allowing you to enjoy a much richer listening experience. SACDs also benefit from an extremely low noise floor, making them a perfect fit for classical music where instruments can go from a whisper to a roar in seconds. The Chicago and London Symphony Orchestras are known to routinely put out their performances in the SACD format.
Backwards Compatibility – SACDs are available as either Single Layer, Dual Layer, or Hybrid discs. Similar to DVDs, single and dual-layer SACDs provide 4.7 GB and 8.5 GB of storage respectively. Hybrid SACDs are the only ones that are compatible with regular CD players due to the existence of a CD audio layer in addition to an SACD layer. Single and the slightly less common dual-layer SACDs can only be played back on a dedicated SACD or compatible Blu-ray player.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q. What is the difference between different Blu-ray formats?
A. When the Blu-ray standard was introduced in the mid-2000s, it was made to support a maximum resolution of 1080p or Full HD. Ultra HD Blu-ray is a relatively new format in comparison but is distinguished by its ability to support 4K or Ultra HD resolution. Most new Blu-ray players support Ultra HD Blu-ray playback. It is important to note that UHD Blu-ray is not backwards compatible with standard Blu-ray players so an appropriate 4K UHD Blu-ray player is required for playback.
Q. Can Blu-ray players play SACDs?
A. While all Blu-ray players are backwards compatible with regular CDs, only some Blu-ray players come with support for SACDs. Look for the SACD logo when purchasing a Blu-ray player if you prefer a single playback device that can handle both formats.
